Department of Zoology

PROFILE

Excellence in education is the hallmark of our department. Established in 1977, the Department of Zoology offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs and was upgraded to a full-fledged research centre in 2013. In 2024, the department introduced a new undergraduate program, “Advanced Zoology and Biotechnology.”

As a centre of academic excellence, the department integrates innovative teaching methodologies, including audio-visual techniques, and provides well-equipped laboratories. Our faculty members play a pivotal role in shaping students’ curricular, co-curricular, and extracurricular achievements. The teaching staff are actively engaged in research and under expert guidance, 12 scholars have been awarded Ph.D. degrees, while 5 scholars are currently pursuing their doctoral studies. The department has successfully secured grants for major and minor research projects and our faculty and students regularly publish research articles in reputed journals. We have organized numerous in-service and hands-on training programs funded by state and central government agencies.
Additionally, we offer certificate courses in sericulture, apiculture, and mushroom culture for undergraduate students. Under the “Earn While You Learn” initiative, the department has launched startup programs in Baking and confectionery and mushroom cultivation, fostering student entrepreneurship.

Every year, postgraduate students participate in summer internship training programs through MoUs with nearby horticulture colleges, hospitals, and agricultural farms, equipping them with valuable practical skills. To broaden subject knowledge, the department organizes national and international seminars and conferences, inviting eminent scholars from prestigious universities worldwide.

In alignment with our commitment to sustainability and healthy living, the department maintains a herbal garden and operates a small-scale vermicompost unit. We also uphold a structured mentoring system, providing counseling support to students facing psychological challenges. The Zoology Association showcases students talents through various activities, encourages participation in intercollegiate competitions, organizes interdisciplinary guest lectures, arranges special lectures aligned with commemorative days in life sciences and celebrates diverse religious festivals.
The department periodically conduct alumnae association meeting and parent teachers association meeting to connect them with department. The department communicates life science-related placement opportunities to the alumnae through college placement cell. Students stay informed about the latest trends and advancements in life sciences and technology through the department notice board. The department arranges educational tours and exposure field visits for students.
Beyond academic excellence, our students have brought numerous laurels to the department and the college, making us proud with their achievements in various fields.
